ESTC reference number T225436. Collated, lacking final leaf. Illustrated, with seven pages of illustrations regarding dinner settings to the rear. The woodcuts are diagrams of how to set a variety of dishes on the table. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, Mrs L McLellan. This work was first issued in Leeds in 1741 and was so popular that a second edition was published in 1743. It was marketed in London and Yorkshire and is believed to be one of the earliest cookery books with provincial origins to hold popularity in the capital. An important cookery work, which gives insight into recipes for soups, cakes, pastes, pickles, creams, jellies, made wines and much more. The work is presented with month-by-month plans for lunch, supper and more. CONDITION In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, sound, with patches of r ubbing to the joints and extremities. Loss to the spine and extremities. Front hinge is strained but firm. Rear endpaper is lacking the bottom half. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, and to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just the odd spot. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
