His presentation copy is addressed to his friend Jacob Tabor and states 'I lately lit upon a spare copy of a little quarto I published as far back as 1840. Will you do me the great pleasure to accept it'. The wood cuts are from my own drawings by a Miss Byfield, well known in her day. She cut those excellent copies of Holbein, in 'The Dance of Death' by Francis Douce published by W Pickering in 1833'. I knew the old Bibliophile W.P well, and he took up my book with gusto.' The first and only edition of this work. With the bookplate of the recipient, Jacob Tabor. Illustrated, with a colour frontispiece, and numerous in-text illustrations by the author. CONDITION In the publisher's quarter straight grained morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart, with light shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Fading to the spine, and just the odd marks to the boards. Remnants of a prior owner's wax seal to the pastedowns. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Letter from the author to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just the odd spot to pages. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
