Description

Rare first edition Yale textbook by Theodore Woolsey was professor of Greek at Yale from 1831 to1846 before becoming president of the University in 1846. This is a text he published with preface, introduction and notes of his translation of Plato’s “Gorgias” or Dialogues “chiefly according ot Stallbaum’s Text”. This particular tome belonged to “Sam Donaldson” who has written his name on most spares and throughout the text, primarily in pencil. There is also a list of the senior class of 1854 appearing on the spare facing the title page, with a similar but slightly different list of names occurs at the top of the Preface. While there does not seem to be writing in the body of the text, on the page across from the beginning of the Greek text is a list of homework and notes, there is the very occasional note in the Greek text as well as occasional underlining and a repetition of the senior class list on the blank facing the Notes section as well as more practice signatures of Sam’s name. There is a ten page listing of James Monroe and Company’s newest offerings at the rear of the text. The back board is off. Acceptable Condition: 12mo ( 7 1/2” X 4 3/4”): full leather with darkening on the long edges as well as the top: spine is cracked and missing about an inch at the head and tail: scuffed corners and edges: missing bit of leather on rear at upper outside edges and broken corner at bottom: occasional foxing as well as toning to the paper due to age: pencil marks throughout (primarily Sam Donaldson): back board off, front board attached through endpaper: preface, introduction and notes in English, text of Gorgias in Greek: small blue sticker inside front at top “no 5/Classics”: “The Gorgias of Plato, Chiefly according to Stallbaum’s Text” by Theordore Woolsey, Professor of Greek in Yale College: Boston: James Monroe and Company: 1842. This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
