The Stock Raiser's Manual: A Guide to the Raising and Improvement of Cattle. Being a Treatise on Their Breeds, Management and Diseases by W. Youatt, Grigg & Elliot, Philadelphia, PA, 1844, 600pp, leather, 5.5 x 8.5, 8vo Fair condition. Leather on front board is chipped off of bottom left corner. Tips are bumped and boards are exposed. Spine is cracked with significant loss of leather; binding is exposed. Spine is still legible. Front and rear hinges are cracked. Significant tea-staining and age-staining throughout: large tea stain at bottom-middle of binding that permeates through almost all of the text block. Text is still legible. 33/34 almost completely detached from binding and page edges are torn/bent. 437pp-440pp bound upside down. Marginalia on front pastedown. Binding is intact but fragile in some places. Please see photos. William Youatt (1776 - 5 February1847) was an English veterinary surgeon and animal welfare writer. Youatt is also the author of similar works pertaining to horses, sheep, pigs, and dogs. These works were all part of the Library of Useful Knowledge and was also reprinted as part of Knight's Farmers' Library. This particular volume on cattle is noted as an influence on Charles Darwin's work on natural selection due to Youatt's understanding of artificial selection in animal breeding.     The shipping was fast and the book was extremely well packaged. The book itself is exactly as pictured and although rare books are expected to be expensive, I was able to get a small discount that at least covered the shipping. I'm happy with my purchase, so I can say that it was a good value. I love to find old relics that kind of come full circle to find their home.     Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish
