Bound in the publisher's original quarter calf with paper covered boards. Published for The Colonial & Indian Exhibition Committee. This informative 'Official Handbook' presents a history of the Cape of Good Hope, a region located in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa. With chapters on early history, occupation by Great Britain, agriculture, mining, nature, and much more. Edited by John Noble, clerk of the House of Assembly. Illustrated with twenty-five plates, some of which are in colour, including six folding plates and a folding map of the Cape. Collated, complete. With two tables presenting statistics on population, revenue, commerce and customs. With publisher's advertisements to the rear and to the endpapers. CONDITION In the publisher's quarter calf with paper covered boards. Externally, slight worn, with rubbing to the boards and extremities. Boards lightly soiled. Rubbing to the spine, with a tear to the head of the front joint. Internally, binding is tender in places, particularly to the front of the work, with a gathering detached between p160-177. Binding is split after the contents. Pages generally bright, with the occasional spotting, heavier to the folding plates. Ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
