Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Kaijuu Wakusei) The story is set in the distant future, where Earth has been overrun by kaiju, the most powerful of which is Godzilla. Humanity, unable to defeat Godzilla, is forced to abandon Earth and live on a space colony. After 20 years in space, the survivors, led by Captain Haruo Sakaki, decide to return to Earth to reclaim their home. However, due to relativistic time dilation, 20,000 years have passed on Earth, and the planet has drastically changed. When the humans return, they discover that Godzilla still reigns, having evolved into a 300-meter-tall monster over the millennia. Haruo, driven by a deep hatred for Godzilla (due to the monster killing his parents), leads the remaining human forces in a desperate plan to defeat the kaiju. They eventually succeed in killing the smaller Godzilla, only to realize that the true Godzilla, now dubbed Godzilla Earth, is much larger and more powerful than they imagined. The film ends with humanity facing an even greater threat. 2. Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (Kessen Kidou) Following the events of the first film, the survivors regroup and encounter the native humanoid race, the Houtua, descendants of humans who remained on Earth. The Houtua worship a god-like being that is hinted to be the remnants of Mechagodzilla, an anti-Godzilla weapon built by humanity 20,000 years ago. The humans find the remnants of Mechagodzilla, now known as Mechagodzilla City, which has evolved into a self-replicating nanomachine facility. Haruo and his team use the city to launch a counterattack against Godzilla Earth. The city becomes a battlefield as the humans plan to trap Godzilla and use the Mechagodzilla technology to kill him. However, the plan fails when the city’s AI prioritizes its own survival, and Godzilla Earth destroys Mechagodzilla City. Haruo is left grappling with the knowledge that their best chance at defeating Godzilla was lost. 3. Godzilla: The Planet Eater (Hoshi o Kuu) In the final film, the existential threat is no longer just Godzilla but an even more dangerous cosmic entity, Ghidorah, a three-headed dragon-like kaiju worshiped by the Exif, an alien race. Ghidorah exists in a different dimension and begins to materialize in Earth's reality to consume the planet. Haruo learns that the Exif, led by their priest Metphies, have summoned Ghidorah as a form of religious salvation, believing that the destruction of the universe is inevitable and should be embraced. Ghidorah’s power is far beyond anything humanity or Godzilla can fight, as the monster bends the laws of physics, making Godzilla powerless. Haruo faces the ultimate choice between surrendering to despair or resisting the cosmic nihilism represented by Ghidorah. In the end, with the help of the Houtua and the spirit of Miana, Haruo destroys Metphies' link to Ghidorah, causing the monster to retreat from the dimension. Godzilla remains the dominant force on Earth, and Haruo ultimately decides to sacrifice himself, destroying the last of humanity's weapons that could be used to wage war against Godzilla, allowing nature to take its course.
