Description

This is the Scarce 1802 First American Edition of GYMNASTICS FOR YOUTH: OR A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HEALTHFUL AND AMUSING EXERCISES FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS. AN ESSAY TOWARD THE NECESSARY IMPROVEMENT OF EDUCATION, CHIEFLY AS RELATES TO THE BODY; Freeley Translated from the German of C. G. (Christian Gotthilf) Salzmann (1744-1811). However, The Library of Congress disputes this assignment of authorship, stating that this treatise was likely written by Johann Christoph Friedrich Guts Muths. The publisher may have used Salzmann's name because of the success of his previously written book on THE ELEMENTS OF MORALITY in 1791. This English language translation is sometimes attributed to Mary Wollstonecraft, who had earlier translated his ELEMENTS OF MORALITY from the German in 1791. This is an octavo volume Printed by William Duane (1760-1835) in Philadelphia measuring 5" x 8" containing xvi, 432 pp. and bound in full period sprinkled calf leather having a spine compartmented by 5 bands of double gilt rules and with a red morocco leather spine label ornately framed in several gilt rolls and with gilt-rolled board edges. Note: Binder misspelled the author's name as "Salzman". The book is dedicated to Thomas Beddoes and is illustrated with 10 copperplate engravings including a folding Frontispiece. The first English language edition was published in London in 1800 and the 10 plates that illustrated that edition have been attributed to William Blake. It can therefore be said that the illustrations for this American edition were copied from Wm. Blake's designs, which in turn would make this the earliest American book to contain Blake's illustrations. So, to sum up, we are offering a book that may not have been by the named author, illustrated by someone unknown who may have copied the designs of William Blake, the book having been translated into English from the original German possibly by the author of FRANKENSTEIN. Ref. Shaw & Shoemaker - Second Series #2360 Please Note: There is an error in pagination; p. 238 is misnumbered 338. These books are exquisite! Just as shown in the photos and described, these are in pristine condition. These were packaged in bubble wrap and shipped inside a protective box. The shipping costs were quite reasonable. Considering the condition of this set of 5 wonderful books, these were a great value! They would have arrived in reasonable time, but the USPS had them here but instead of delivering them, sent them to Omaha, then to Des Moines, and finally back here.
