At that point in time, the highest rank or grade was a Lieutenant General (three stars) of which there were seven prior to the start of WWI. Major General Leonard Wood put together (as Chief of Staff) this nifty little book for the US Army. Unlike the current "Drill & Ceremonies Manual, It contains drill instructions for the individual soldier to the brigade. It discusses combat tactics, the machine gun (after WWI use of the MG, this would require a complete re-write, how infantry should deal with the Calvary, where the Band plays a role and the complete notes for all bugles calls, how to use the bayonet takes up quite a few pages and there are six pages on semaphore communications using two flags. Major (later Lieutenant) General Wood was, along with Theodore Roosevelt, principle for starting the Rough Riders Brigade and a training base that opened up just before WWII in Missouri was named after him (as well as an attack ship of the US Navy). NOTE: There are publications that are similar to this but are later editions published by a private company This edition includes corrections through 1913. Others have a number of officers listed but that
