Elite result-oriented lawyer Shigemori (Fukuyama Masaharu) becomes the assigned counsel for Mikuma (Yakusho Koji), who has confessed to killing the factory boss who fired him. As Mikuma, who already has a criminal record from a murder charge 30 years ago, faces a possible death sentence, Shigemori's main responsibility is to try to lighten his sentence. Though this at first seems like an open-and-shut case, Mikuma's inconsistent testimony raises many questions. Shigemori begins to have doubts about Mikuma's motives and guilt, but the more he investigates, the less he understands his client.
