Description
Rare 1644 text, "Institutiones Physicae" by Gilbert Jack (aka Gilberti Jacchaei aka Gilbertus Jacchaeus). Mainly Aristotelian in scope, it is divided into nine “books” on natural phenomena, minerals, metals, salts, vacuum, fermentation, fire, etc. Editio Postrema, emendatissima (Final edition, most recently revised). Full leather binding with gilt spine and cover decoration and lettering. Jack (1578?-1628) received his M.D. degree at Leyden in 1611 and became professor of philosophy at Leyden (1604-28). Approximately 3x5". The bookplates are include those of medical doctor Dr. Ernest Desnos (1825-1852) and Dr. Tibulle Desbarreaux-Bernard (1798-1880, born Tibulle Pellet Desbarreaux in Toulouse) the son of Hyacinthe Pellet, a mayor of Toulouse. Desbarreaux-Bernard amassed a huge book collection most of which was purchased by the library of Toulouse. His bookplate is featured in some important collections of bookplates. Very good. Minor wear to leather, gilt decoration and lettering on spine and covers in good shape overall. Leather just starting to crack along front hinge, but holding up well. Binding is tight.A couple gouge marks on front, but they may be original to the leather (note that gilt border appears to overly gouge on bottom). Minor wear to corners. Two personal bookplates inside front cover. Interior very good, with generally crisp, bright pages (maybe very slight browning toward edges and light foxing to title page). See photos.
