I show any problems i found. no bad smell ---A Critical pronouncing Dictionary, and expositor of THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: in which not only the meaning of every word is explained, and the sound of every syllable distinctly shown, but, where words are subject to different Pronunciations, the reasons for each are duly considered, and the best pronunciation is selected. by JOHN WALKER, (first pocket edition) Published--Hartford: silas andrus year--1823 Pages-11 pages plus index, condition as shown, Missing back cover, writing at beginning as shown. spotting throughout, but stated first pocked edition. ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THIS(and my other) OLD SCHOOL BOOKS (pre 1855 or so), is SOMETIMES they are easier to find (new republished) than the original old book (like this is) and because the paper in here is flax(or similar) and not wood pulp, this old book will still last longer then the new ones printed today (because the new ones will brown and fade), and the old ones are also often cheaper, so in 100 years this great old book will still be looking nice inside and then new ones, not so much. -----In the 1800s, fibre crops such as flax , which provided linen fibres, were still the primary material source, and paper was a relatively expensive commodity. The use of wood to make pulp for paper began with the development of mechanical pulping in Germany by F.G. Keller in the 1840s, and by the Canadian inventor Charles Fenerty in Nova Scotia . Chemical processes quickly followed, first with J. Roth 's use of sulfurous acid to treat wood, followed by Benjamin Tilghman 's U.S. patent on the use of calcium bisulfite , Ca(HSO 3 ) 2 , to pulp wood in 1867. Almost a decade later the first commercial sulfite pulp mill was built in Sweden. It used magnesium as the counter ion and was based on work by Carl Daniel Ekman . By 1900, sulfite pulping had become the dominant means of producing wood pulp, surpassing mechanical pulping methods. The competing chemical pulping process, the sulfate or kraft process was developed by Carl F. Dahl in 1879 and the first kraft mill started (in Sweden) in 1890. the scale behind the item is in inches I PACK BETWEEN CARDBOARD FOR PROTECTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AS SHOWN, USE EBAYS ZOOM IN FEATURE TO GET A GREAT LOOK AT THE ITEM UP CLOSE, and email me any questions, please. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ VIEW MY OTHER ITEMS ON EBAY TERMS AND CONDITIONS Paypal users must be verified, and have a confirmed address. The package arrived quickly; and the packaging was great. This order was a December, 1914 issue of a child's magazine. I have collected these magazines for many years and I look for the best examples I can find. This particular issue was advertised as having no covers. But due to the age and rarity, I decided to purchase it based on the photos. The photos fell short of showing how fantastic the magazine is. To me, it is priceless. This is a seller I will purchase from again. 5+++
